About Us

Our home, as well as the heart of Deebet Registered, is located in the beautiful Niagara Peninsula.  People, from all over the world, travel to this destination to take in one of nature’s greatest wonders—Niagara Falls. We live a mere 30 minutes from the Falls as well as many other amazing historical sites. If you get the chance to visit , we'd love to be your tour guides. While you are here of course, you will get to meet our beautiful DeeBet Toy Manchester Terriers and learn more about our history in the sport of dogs.

The name, DeeBet is a combination of my nick name, Dee and the beginning three letters of Ted’s and my last name, Bettle. DeeBet was registered with the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) in 1977, when we began breeding Doberman Pinschers. Over the time frame from 1977 to 1995 we produced Award of Merit, Best in Show and Best in Specialty winning Dobermans; obedience and Schutzhund title holders; as well as just super family pets.

The Beginning

As a young girl, I grew up with a very smart Border Collie, a faithful German Shepherd dog and a beautiful Rough Coated Collie (of course her name was Lassie). My husband Ted, as a young boy, had a Springer Spaniel, named Simon, that he still talks about today, as well as a Cocker Spaniel and a Miniature Pinscher. These early experiences have created two keen dog lovers.

Ted and I joined the St. Catharines’ District Kennel and Obedience Club in the early '70s where we took obedience and conformation handling classes with several of our dogs, earning obedience and conformation titles along the way. We were founding members of the Niagara District Schutzhund Club, and attained Schutzhund degrees on some of our Dobes. Whenever possible we attended training seminars to hone our skills.

The Dobermans

It was in 1977 that after much study of the Doberman breed that I made the conscious decision to begin a breeding program. One of the best seminars that both Ted and I attended during this time was called Dog Steps by Rachel Page Elliott. It taught us so much about conformation and the importance of breeding proper structure to obtain sound movement—no matter what the breed. The basic principles learned from this seminar and many other breeding seminars and courses taken, still serve to guide us today. It was never our goal to breed a large quantity of champions, but rather to make quality our overriding goal. We wanted to do our best to improve and maintain what was good about the breed and leave a line of sound dogs as a legacy for others to build on, or dogs that pet owners will enjoy and be proud to own. You can see Sadie, BIS, BISS Ch. Ryas Gadabout Deebet and our other beautiful Dobermans by visiting the gallery section where some of our favourite Dobes are pictured.

Our Golden Moments

The Golden Retrievers became part of our family after the loss of some of our older Dobermans. In 1994, we obtained our first golden Sunny, Ch. Prospectors Deebet Sunrise, C.D., at 14 months became a champion, owner-handled with a group placement. He also easily attained his Companion Dog Obedience title. He was an extremely smart dog and passed this on to many of his offspring. Sterling, Dandors Prospector for DeeBet, joined our family one year after Sunny's arrival. Liz Edwards (Prospectors Goldens) convinced me that Sunny should have a golden friend, since he was being totally dominated by our Toy Manchesters! We showed Sterling and gained some points with him, but not all dogs like to be show dogs and Sterling was one of these. Sunny sired some amazing puppies that excelled in rescue work, obedience and agility. One of his most outstanding puppies, owned by Tracy Snyder, was Canon, MOTCH & BDA OTCH Prospectors Otta B N Pictures, AM UKC CDA CGN AGN ADC RN BDA OA NJW OBHF. Fortunately Tracy is continuing Sunny and Canon's legacy with her excellent breeding program. Canon was still obtaining High in Trial scores even at the age of 10 years. Sadly we have now lost both Sunny and his best buddy, Sterling but, like our Dobes and Toy Manchesters that have passed on, they forever hold a special place in our hearts.

The Invasion of the Toymans

In 1988, our first Toy Manchester, Ch. Ryas Sweet Dreams Deebet (Ch. Saint Lazar's Chip of the Rock ex Loyalest Runabout Ryas) became our young son's special companion and my foundation bitch for our present day sixth generation of Toy Manchesters. Sweetums (name chosen by my son) was purchased from Patricia (Cunningham) White at Ryas Registered. Pat and I co-owned Sweetums and one of her progeny Ch. Ryas You Talk Too Much, Gabby was #2 Toy Manchester in Canada in 1994 and 1995, owner handled by Pat and myself, with limited showing.

These two dogs provided the foundation that continues today to carry on the Ryas-DeeBet lines through breeding on a very limited and selective basis, endeavouring to keep sound and well cared for TMTs, keeping the goal of quality over quantity front of mind.

Peggy-Sue, Ch. DeeBet's Special One, a Gabby daughter finished owner-handled, taking two Best Puppy in Group wins and two Toy Group 3rds.

Taboo, Ch. Fwaggles Hits the Highspot came to us from long-time friends, Wendy and Amanda Kelly. He was bred to Peggy Sue.

SamanthaCh. DeeBet's Play it Again Sam was the first daughter of Taboo and Peggy Sue to finish her championship, also owner-handled. She was a joy to show, very animated and moved with authority. She started her career from the senior puppy class first time out and she won over a Best in Show Specials Dog. Still as a senior puppy, Sam garnered a 4th in Group and Best Puppy In Group and a Group 3rd. The only time she was defeated, was once by her sire, Taboo and once by her brother PJDeeBet's Play the Top Hits.

Also to finish from the Taboo and Peggy Sue litter was Bailey; Ch. DeeBet's Play it Loud Fwaggle. He was handled by his owner, Janice Thompson of New Brunswick. He was Janice’s first owner-handled champion. As well, he achieved his PCD Obedience title, with Janice.

Ch. Deebet's Instant Replay, Reba was a female that we kept from a repeat breeding of the Taboo and Peggy Sue combination. She began her career also owner-handled, with a Group 2nd and Best Puppy in Group. She took one more Group 2nd and finished her championship by taking Best of Breed over group winning specials.

Reba was bred in 2006 to MBIS Ch. Saint Lazar’s Sir Lancelot owned by Diane Vendittoli of Quebec. This produced an amazing looking litter from which we decided to hold on to 3 of the pups. Ted and I and Bruce Weegar, who co-owned one of the girls with me, had a great deal of fun finishing their championships. The judges often had a hard time deciding on which to put up for breed and we received many compliments for producing such an outstanding litter.

The two girls we kept were Ch. DeeBet's Avalon and Ch. DeeBet's Camelot and the boy was Ch. DeeBet's KIng Arthur. Avie and Cammie finished their championships quickly, both with Toy Group wins. Artie also finished his championship in record time. All three were shown owner/breeder handled. We felt that Artie had the ability to do so much more, so we agreed to co-own him with Corey Titon. In Corey's capable hands Artie garnered many Toy Group placements, an All-Breed Best in Show, and won the Eukanuba Best of the Best. Artie finished his career as BIS GCHX Deebet's King Arthur CGN AGXV AGIJ AGNS AGNJS RE OTCH. As a stud dog, he produced some outstanding progeny. His photo, showing proper movement for a Toy Manchester Terrier, is featured in the Canadian Manchester Terrier Club PowerPoint Presentation and was also in the American Manchester Terrier Club's presentation ... quite an honour for us.

Most recently we have shown two litter brothers, from the pairing of Artie and Token Fwaggles Reluctant Angel), who earned their Grand Championships along the way to top breed status. BIS RBIS BVIS BPIS GCH Deebet's Robin Hood (Robbie) was #1 TMT in 2015 and 2016; and #2 in 2018 with two Robbie sons in #1 and #3 positions, GCH Fwaggles Sting Like a Bee and GCH Fwaggles Dreamboat v Rustic Ln, respectively. GCH Deebet's Excaliber (Cal) earned #2 spot for 2017.
